Our local community initiatives are designed to build awareness of dangers in aquatic environments and to arm the community with lifesaving skills. Recent activities at the Academy include working with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse groups, people with disabilities and local school students.
The staff at ASTA have been working closely with Sydwest Multicultural Services conducting water safety sessions for Muslim women from Mt Druitt and Blacktown. The sessions consist of water safety, CPR and first aid education as well as learn to swim classes. The Academy’s unique design allows the participating women privacy whilst continuing our day to day operations.
In October 2011, 208 students from Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Wentworthville participated in a 10- day Swim & Survive program. The students thoroughly enjoyed the program, with many continuing to improve their skills at the Academy over summer.
At the end of 2011, students with disabilities from Williams Rose School at Seven Hills attended the Academy to participate in learn to swim classes. Over a five week period, we provided a friendly, fun and safe environment for the students to participate in 20 minute classes. We look forward to seeing them again in Term 4!
